You may recognize this popular duo from NBC’s new hit show, “The Voice,” where they landed a spot on Team Blake and gave it their all in the Battle Rounds. Although their journey on “The Voice” came to an end, for Elenowen, the journey has just begun. The indie duo from Nashville, Tennessee, comprised of Josh and Nicole Johnson, formed after the two fell in love while pursuing solo careers. As fans of music, we should feel blessed that the two met and collaborated. The combination of passion, talent, and originality brought in from both individuals is unmatched. This is where talent competitions really do their job. Elenowen’s time on “The Voice” brought their music into the homes of Americans all around the country. Both Josh and Nicole worked at a coffee shop to make ends meet before pursuing their dream in full force.
Their first taste at their dream career as musicians happened when they released their debut album, “Pulling Back the Veil.” The album contains 8 original tracks that document a journey of the ups and downs of life and marriage. “Pulling Back The Veil” is truly fantastic. The duo gets their message across so gracefully and organically through their meaningful lyrics. The harmonies are incredible. EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH ELENOWEN
HypeTune.com: How has your time on “The Voice” influenced your career as a musical duo?
Elenowen: We learned an immense amount about performing under pressure, being interviewed, how reality TV works, and more in a short amount of time. We are overwhelmed on a daily basis at how people have responded to our music since being on The Voice. Specifically, our social networking sites have increased by the thousands, our debut record, Pulling Back the Veil, shot up to #2 on iTunes singer/songwriter charts, our brand new single “Honey Come Home” went to #1 on the same chart. It’s been a blessing that we hope continues.
HypeTune.com: Why did you decide to go with Blake Shelton as your coach? How was your experience with Blake and Reba as mentors?
Elenowen: When it came down to it, Blake expressed the importance of putting marriage in front of everything else, which is very important to us. He also was the first one to turn around – so we knew he was a believer from the beginning.
Both Blake & Reba were very invested in us and truly wanted to help in every way they could. They didn’t treat being on The Voice as another paycheck. Overall they’re both very down to earth, funny, & kind people. Even after our departure from the show, Blake has remained one of our biggest supporters. He’s the real deal. We are beyond grateful for his guidance and friendship.
HypeTune.com: Oftentimes we’ll see groups be split up on talent shows. Did you ever feel that risk? If so, how were you prepared to handle it?
Elenowen: We knew from the beginning that duos were allowed, which is one of the main reasons we auditioned in the first place. What is special about our sound is what happens when we perform together – you can’t get it from just one of us singing on our own.
HypeTune.com: What is the significance of the title of your debut album, “Pulling Back the Veil”? Where did the inspiration come from?
Elenowen: The title ‘Pulling Back the Veil’ symbolizes pulling back a bride’s veil and stepping in to a new season of life. All of the songs on the record were written during our first year of marriage, and it’s an open and brutally honest glimpse into that. The theme throughout the record is fighting to keep love alive and fresh in the midst of the obstacles life throws your way. Also, there’s a line in the last song, “Cripple Me,” that says “You’ve pulled back your veil, laid it all on the line,” – which is exactly what we did with this debut record.
HypeTune.com: If you could have any guest artist play on your next record, who would you choose and why?
Elenowen: This might be cheating, but we would write a song with Ryan Adams and Bob Dylan, and have Ray LaMontagne and Alison Krauss sing it!
HypeTune.com: A big part of your dream, as mentioned on “The Voice,” was moving out of that basement. So, any plans to move out? What can we expect from Elenowen in the coming months?
Elenowen: No plans to move out yet! We have redecorated and made it a bit more sophisticated, though. We’re in the process of writing new material for our sophomore album. We plan to go back into the studio this fall. We can’t wait to share more new music with our fans.
HypeTune.com: You just released a new single, “Honey Come Home” and it immediately went to #1 on the iTunes singer/songwriter chart. Congratulations!! Talk a little bit about the idea behind the song. Will your fans hear that on an upcoming album?
Elenowen: Thanks so much! We are blown away by the response to “Honey Come Home.” So grateful…
The idea behind the song is two lovers admitting that they’ve both hurt each other. In spite of the hurt, they choose to forgive and move on. It’s also just another way to show that marriage and keeping love alive and fresh is something worth fighting for.
“Honey Come Home” will definitely be on our new record.
