Name one other reggae artist other than Bob Marley? Can’t name one? Didn’t think so. Relax everything little thing is gonna be alright, cause I’m here to help you get into reggae. So roll a fat one (we don’t condone drug use), grab a red stripe and lay back in your hammock.

First things first, lets get you acquainted with some classics. Now Bob is king of reggae, no doubt! (can’t stop with these puns), but he was not the first person to make some sweet jams. Check out some of these classic artists:

Fattie Fattie – Clancy Eccles (1968)

Long Shot Kick de Bucket- The Pioneers (1969)

Pressure Drop – Toots & The Maytals(1969)

By the 70′s, reggae had broken into mainstream with the success of Bob Marley and covers of reggae songs by artists like Eric Clapton. The 80′s and 90′s saw a huge reggae revival in the UK and in America, here are some of those artists:

Red Red Wine – UB40 (1983)

Pass the Dutchie – Music Youth (1982)

Murder She Wrote – Chaka Demus and Pliers (1992)

Bad Boys – Inner Circle (1994)

Recently, reggae has lost a lot of popularity, but don’t worry there’s still a lot of great artists pumpin’ out some good music. Try these to start with:

Welcome to Jamrock – Damian Marley (2002)

Youth – Matisyahu (2005)

Whip Dem Jah Jah- Anthony B. (1998)

Our independent reggae pick:

Twisted Love – Seedless (2010)

So there you have it. Everything you need to get into reggae. Of course, there are a lot of other artists out there, so look around, discover the undiscovered, and if you think they deserve to be mentioned post it in the comments or send an email to robross@hypetune.com.
