Established in 2009, ThE iZ, the Cayman Island/Miami based music production group, have started a musical journey that is beginning to spread globally.  Music producer Jason Gilbert (aka JG) recruited a team to create ThE iZ Music, an EMI publishing official production team.  The team consists of three amazingly talented music and vocal producers and songwriters: Jason Gilbert, Lonney McField, and Stephan Cotterell.  They have been releasing hits ever since.

In April of last year, ThE iZ released their debut album titled “Beach Club.”  The album is a collection of awesome tunes that we’ve found fitting in all situations.  Whether your chillin’, cruising, or partying, ThE iZ has your fix.  If you don’t know where to start listening, start with the first two hits “Tonight” and “Mind Trip.”  Since the album’s release in Japan in September of last year, it has met great success including a #2 spot on the International Music Chart for their song “Tonight.”  Also, the single “Suntan” off the debut album is featured in the Vicks DayQuil TV campaign.

Our featured music video of the week last week was their single “Distance,” a wonderful song, music video, and tribute to the people of Japan and to all who have lost or felt the effects of recent devastations.  This song is also a little sneak peak at their sophomore album.  If you are still wondering about this awesome group, Jason Gilbert (JG) of ThE iZ, was part of the Grammy-award winning production team responsible for Eminem’s comeback album, “Recovery,” which won “Best Rap Album” at the 2011 Grammy Awards.  This musical group gives The Cayman Islands another reason to be proud!  Check them out by streaming the entire “Beach Club” album below.  Also check out their music videos for “Distance” and “Mind Trip” and a video of JG at the 2011 Grammy Awards.  Finally, we have an EXCLUSIVE interview with the group (below).  Be sure to read that and get a closer look into what they do. Cayman Islands, stand up!  Get on the hype.

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH THE IZ

Q. The music video for “Distance” is very inspiring.  What does it mean to you guys as a group to connect the world in times like these with your music?

A. Music is what we love and we love to create new and cool sounds, so incorporating world events and expressing what’s going on in other places is new to us but we felt doing this song and video was very necessary. We want the world to remember that no matter your race or where you’re from, our feelings of loss, love, pain, happiness and joy are all the same.

Q. Where do you find inspiration for your lyrics?  What has been your biggest inspiration throughout your musical journey?

A. Inspiration for lyrics comes from life, everything around us, everything we do on a day-to-day basis. We just put that in our music so it’s easy for others to relate to.

Q. This question is for Jason (JG).  What was it like being part of the Grammy-award winning production team for Eminem’s “Recovery”?

A. I felt honored and blessed to be a part of that team. It has definitely opened up a lot of doors for ThE iZ, and I just want to continue working hard and see how much further it can take us.

Q. If another musician covered one of your songs, who would you want it to be and why?

A. There are too many to choose from but it would be really cool to hear what Coldplay or Imogen Heap would do with one our tracks.  They have the ability to take a song and break down genre barriers so that it appeals to music lovers as a whole.

Q. What can we expect in the future from ThE iZ?

A. Every time we’re asked that question we say the same thing, expect the unexpected. We’re still growing as a group and trying to bring something new each time.  We are wrapping up production on our 2nd untitled LP which is due out later this summer.  It’s a big step from our debut album but still staying true to our Caribbean roots.  It’s not just one particular style which is what makes us ThE iZ.  It’s going to be a monster!
